WARNING: SCAMMERS TARGETING HOCKEY ASSOCIATIONS
Unfortunately, some hockey families have been impacted by this scam. Please note:
- You should never send a gift card electronically. Furthermore, a hockey association should never ask its members to do this. Unless you are supporting a hockey association or team fundraiser and dropping the gift card off in-person, avoid gift cards!
Scammers may disguise their emails to appear as if they are coming from hockey association executive members or other association volunteers. Examples of these scams include fake emails claiming urgent needs or referencing association activities.
Please be aware that email addresses can also be hacked or spoofed. To protect yourself and your teams:
- Be vigilant. If something feels off, trust your instincts.
- Do not respond to suspicious emails. Verify directly with the sender using a known, trusted contact method.
Associations should take steps to address this issue, including removing as many private emails from team staff lists on their websites as possible. When executive members or team managers send emails to their teams, they should blind copy (BCC) the recipients to prevent the spread of private emails.
We would also ask that our associations notify their membership about this ongoing scam and encourage them to remain cautious and report any concerns to their associations through a trusted communication channel.
Thank you for your support.
