MMFHL TEAM WINS 2 NATIONS CUP

In one of the biggest tournaments in female hockey, with 36 teams from the United States and Canada participating, the Maritime Major Female Hockey League made a great showing for itself at the Two Nations Cup in Brampton, Ontario last weekend.

The Cape Breton Lynx, Actions Benefits Penguins and Northern Subway Selects were all in action at the tournament, and between the three teams, they were only defeated in 2 games over the whole weekend.  The Lynx finished with a win and one tie in their three games, which left them on the outside looking in once the playoff rounds started, and also ended up tying their final consolation game, finishing with a record of 1--1-2.  The Penguins went through pool play 3-0, won their Round of 16 game, and then faced a familiar foe in the quarter-finals - which is where they bowed out.

But from a Maritime perspective, the story of the tournament were the Northern Subway Selects.  The Selects started off going 2-0-1 in pool play (all against Ontario teams), with wins over North Halton and Belleville along with a tie against Brantford.  That put the Selects into the Round of 16 where they had a true cross-country matchup taking on the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers from British Columbia.  A win there put them into the quarter-finals against the Actions Benefits Penguins.  As is always the case when these familiar foes took to the ice, it was a close, hard-fought struggle, with the Selects ekeing out a 1-0 win.  That gave them a meeting with the Winnipeg Ice in the semi-finalm where they won 3-0.  In the Final, the Sudbury Lady Wolves were the only thing standing between the Selects and the banner, and it took going all the way to a shootout before the title was decided, with our MMFHL defending champions adding 2 Nations Champions to their resume.

Everyone at the MMFHL is incredibly proud of all three of our representatives at this event, and a special congratulations goes out to the Selects.

Regular season play resumes this weekend.
